# Human milk mineral measurement for the MIREC study

Health Canada seeks a supplier to measure chloride, fluoride, iron, chromium, arsenic, lead and cadmium in biobanked human milk from the MIREC cohort. The analyses are intended to fill gaps in Canadian human-milk composition data and support work on toxic elements in foods for young children. This is an open Advance Contract Award Notice using a non-competitive procurement method. Suppliers must submit a Statement of Capabilities addressing specified laboratory experience, technical support and at least five years of relevant experience. The notice states a five-month term with a proposed 26 October 2026 start.

New analyses based on optimized techniques are needed. \r\nAs the MIREC dataset is large, included subjects from 10 study sites in 6 provinces across Canada, and collected detailed data on demographic and health characteristics known to be associated with the composition of human milk, the data from this study will be a valuable contribution to Canadian and International efforts to quantify human milk composition. "text": "HUMAN MILK MINERAL MEASUREMENT (MIREC STUDY)\nSolicitation number: 1000267921\nPublication date: 2026/10/09\nClosing date and time: 2026/10/23, 14:00 EDT\nStatus: Open\n\nDescription\nTo measure the concentrations of various components (chloride, fluoride, iron, chromium, arsenic, lead, cadmium) in human milk samples collected from the MIREC cohort.\n\nA recent review of human milk composition data from Canada and the United States aiming to identify sources of information for updating the USDA FoodData Central database identified issues regarding the suitability of the existing literature, including that most studies were published prior to 1990, had methodological issues, sample sizes <50, and included mostly healthy Caucasian participants. A larger evidence scan conducted to support future Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI) efforts for infants and young children, which included data from other high- or middle-income countries, also noted a lack of acceptable data for many components of human milk.\n\nIn this study, several components of interest (notably chloride, fluoride, iron and chromium) will be measured in biobanked human milk collected in MIREC. These components were chosen to fill in the fields needed for the human milk profile in the Canadian Nutrient File that will not be measured by another ongoing study of Canadian human milk, while taking into account what has already been measured in MIREC human milk samples, and what is possible given of the sample collection and storage techniques. Additionally, arsenic, lead and cadmium will be measured to contribute to Closer to Zero, an FDA-led initiative to set action levels for toxic elements in foods intended for infants and young children. Data on additional elements may be obtained as part of the panel for the aforementioned elements because the ICP-MS technique used to measure them is a multi-element method. Iron, chromium, lead and cadmium have been measured previously in MIREC samples, but were undetectable in >60% of samples, making the data unreliable for estimating population exposures. New analyses based on optimized techniques are needed.\n\nAs the MIREC dataset is large, included subjects from 10 study sites in 6 provinces across Canada, and collected detailed data on demographic and health characteristics known to be associated with the composition of human milk, the data from this study will be a valuable contribution to Canadian and International efforts to quantify human milk composition. This will contribute to improved information supporting advice around human milk feeding and formula composition for Canadians.\n\nMinimum Requirements\nAny interested supplier must demonstrate by way of a Statement of Capabilities that it meets the following minimum requirements:\n1. The supplier is required to have experience measuring elements (including toxic and trace metals) in human milk using inductively coupled plasma MS using an Agilent 8800 triple quadrupole MS or equivalent (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35218192/).\n2. Providing technical support as required.\n3. At least Five (5) years of experience measuring and interpreting data related to toxic and trace elements in human biological samples, including human milk.\n\nContractor’s Obligations\nUnless otherwise specified, the Contractor must use its own equipment and software for the performance of this Statement of Work.\n\nLocation of Work, Work site and Delivery Point\nThe work will be completed at the contractor’s facility, by the contractor’s staff, and using the contractor’s equipment and consumables. Results and reports will be delivered electronically, remaining biospecimens will be returned to the MIREC Biobank using a method agreed upon by the technical authority and the contractor.\n\nContract duration\nThe estimated contract period will be 5 month(s), with a proposed start date of 2026/10/26.\n\nTrade agreements\nNo trade agreements are applicable to this solicitation process.\n\nReason for limited tendering\nA contracting officer can use limited tendering for specific reasons outlined in the applicable trade agreements. The reason for this contract is described below: None.\n\nNotice type: Advance Contract Award Notice.\nProcurement method: Non-Competitive.\nSelection criteria: Not applicable.\nCommodity - UNSPSC: 41110000 Measuring and observing and testing instruments.",
